A Badass's Guide to Breaking Into Data
Updated: Jan 14, 2020
A story of an environmental engineer-turned-data scientist
This isn’t a story of mine.
This is a story of a data scientist, data strategist, trainer, and tech business coach who has been an inspiration to many professionals in data space. She is Lillian Pierson — founder of Data-Mania and instructor on LinkedIn Learning — who has also authored several books to provide guidance to beginners in data science.
A Badass’s Guide to Breaking Into Data — a book written by her —is another masterpiece and highly recommended if you’d like to further advance your career in the data space or want to become a successful entrepreneur in data science field.
Why do I think this book is a must-read?
Simple. The book is practical. Nothing fancy.
Despite the brief content provided, it really breaks it down to what really matters to you — as an aspiring data professionals —to learn from the best resources and how to build your portfolio and personal branding step by step.
To my surprise, the book even goes a step further by showing you which tech influencers for data professionals to follow on different social media. I was like, what? Seriously? The massive action taken by Lillian Pierson to not only help people to learn from the best resources, but also the best people in the industry, is absolutely inspiring!
Build a Data Science Blog
In fact, the chapter that captures my most attention is how to build a data science blog.
To me, it all boils down to one word — Sharing.
An analogy for thought — Imagine you analyzed a dataset and came up with some interesting results to generate insights and action plans. But in the end, you just didn’t get the chance to present your results to stakeholders or perhaps, your analysis simply didn’t have any listeners to give you feedback.
So the questions is — Have you done any analysis?
Hmm…Deep inside your heart, you know you spent a lot of time analyzing the dataset but opportunities didn’t knock on the door to let you share and present the results.
Back to writing your data science blog. Despite you may have a groundbreaking solution or insights obtained from a dataset to solve a problem, nothing will happen if the solution is kept in isolation — because no one knows about it.
Sharing. That’s the key to open up doors of opportunity to become successful in the data space. People know what you’ve done and what you’re capable of by putting your learning journey or analysis into words. By sharing you’re also open to learning from others.
Thank you for reading. Hopefully you’ll find the book useful and I’d love to hear from you what you’ve learned from the content and how you’re going to apply the concepts. Leave your comments below!
